How deletion works
When an inbox goes, its mail goes
- The moment an inbox expiresIt is marked expired, then within a short grace its messages are hard-deleted: the stored copies in object storage first, the rows after. A sweep runs every minute.
- Stored message bodies + attachmentsKept only as long as the inbox that received them. Anything whose inbox is gone is swept from storage within 24 hours as a backstop, even if a delete was refused the first time.
- Unconfirmed masked aliasesAn alias you never confirmed is removed after two days. A confirmed alias is permanent until you delete it.
Attachments
Scanned, then handed over carefully
- Every attachment is virus-scannedOn arrival, against a live signature database. Anything that matches is blocked from download and shown as failed a virus scan.
- Downloaded, never renderedA clean attachment always downloads as a file and is served from our CDN by an unguessable link. It is never opened as a live document on our pages, and executable types are refused outright.
